You’re Not Lazy. You’re Holding Pain That Was Never Yours to Carry
If you’re searching for a personal trainer in Arlington VA because your body keeps breaking down despite doing everything right—this post is for you. You’re not lazy. You’re not crazy. You’re holding pain that was never yours to carry.
In Arlington and D.C., success is a badge of honor. You grind through meetings, deadlines, flights, gym sessions. You keep pushing because that’s what high performers do.
But what happens when your body won’t play along?
- Your digestion is wrecked.
- Your back always hurts.
- You get sick more often than you want to admit.
- You’re exhausted, even after 8 hours of sleep. Or you don’t sleep much at all.
- STOP wearing that as a badge of honor
You don’t feel old. Your mind is sharp. But your body? It feels like it’s slowly betraying you.
This isn’t aging.
It’s not just stress.
And it’s definitely not random.
When Trauma Lives in the Body

Here’s what I’ve seen—and lived:
Most high performers didn’t become this way by accident.
They were shaped by their past.
Some were abandoned. Some abused. Others grew up never feeling safe—so they learned to outwork the chaos.
They found worth in doing.
And when life got hard, they trained harder. Worked longer. Silenced the pain through control.
But that trauma? It didn’t disappear.
It burrowed into their fascia. Their gut. Their hormones.
It showed up as autoimmune disease, migraines, chronic tension, and mysterious pain no doctor could fully explain.
Most people think trauma has to be dramatic. But trauma can look like:
- Never feeling safe as a kid
- Growing up around chaos
- Being told “you’re fine” when you weren’t
- Living decades in hypervigilance
And when that goes unresolved, it shows up in your body.
In your fascia. In your gut microbiome. In your immune system.
That’s not random pain. It’s a signal.
You Can’t Heal What You’re Still Carrying

Let me be blunt:
You can’t deadlift your way out of trauma.
You can’t meditate away decades of stored grief.
Most personal training programs miss this entirely. They treat the body like a machine—but you’re not a machine. You’re a full human, carrying decades of unsaid things. And until you face it, the body will keep the score.
At Evolve To Fit, we offer trauma-informed personal training built for high performers in Arlington and D.C.
We help your body feel safe again—so it can finally heal.
Not with intensity.
But with precision, presence, and restoration.
And honesty- I will NEVER sugarcoat or coddle. I find that unkind and disingenuous.
An Arlington, VA Personal Trainer Story- My Story: Grit, Pain, and the Cost of Denial

When I was a firefighter in Prince George’s County, I didn’t slow down. Not even when my body begged for it.
I was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis—an autoimmune disease that ravaged my gut. I was bleeding daily. And still, I showed up to work. Not because I was fine—but because I was terrified of being seen as weak.
On emergency calls, I’d ask strangers—patients I was helping—if I could use their bathroom.
Other times, I’d go into the back of the ambulance and defecate into a medical waste bag, while my partner ran the scene.I was in constant physical pain.
I didn’t call out sick.
Because in my mind, warriors didn’t take sick days.
They just pushed through.
But that mindset almost killed me.
It wasn’t strength—it was survival.
And survival isn’t the same as healing.
The Familiar Misery That Keeps You Stuck
Here’s the twisted part—most of us don’t want to stay in pain.
But we do it anyway.
Why?
Because it’s familiar.
It’s what we’ve known. And the body—even when hurting—chooses the familiar over the unknown.
That’s why people stay stuck in stress, pain, and dysfunction.
Not because they love misery—but because they’re addicted to the known.
I wrote more about this here:
Addicted to Misery – Why So Many Stay Stuck
This Isn’t Woo-Woo. It’s Proven.
Science is catching up. Studies confirm the gut-brain connection, trauma’s effect on inflammation, and the way fascia holds emotion.
