In November of 2023, I started questioning why I felt so tense all the time- defensive, impatient, like I was carrying a weight I couldn’t put down. Maybe I had always been that way. Maybe it was the burden of being a business owner, or maybe it was something deeper. Regardless, I knew something had to change.

That’s when I turned to gratitude. Not in a vague, “just be grateful” kind of way, but as a real, daily practice. At first, it felt unnatural, like learning a new language. But just like strength training, just like any skill, you don’t get better without repetition. You put in the work, you refine, and over time, it becomes second nature. And now, nearly every day, I remind myself to be grateful. Not perfectly, not flawlessly, but consistently.

Gratitude keeps the demons away.

For me, what helped the most was finding my way back to God. I read the Bible most nights. I pray every day. I talk to God every day. That connection has been an anchor for me. If the mention of God makes you uncomfortable, swap that word out for whatever resonates- universe, source, something greater than yourself. The name doesn’t change the truth: we are all connected to something beyond what we can comprehend.

Part of my gratitude practice has also been about shedding the weight I was never meant to carry. The patterns I inherited but don’t have to keep. The stories I told myself about my past that no longer serve me. I used to expect the worst. Now, I believe in positive outcomes. I see how the past- every challenge, every fight- was shaping me, not breaking me. I see that I have always been a fighter. And I see, more than ever, that I was never fighting alone.

Through the grace of God, I’ve been guided this entire time.

So today, I’m grateful. For the struggles that shaped me. For the lessons I couldn’t have learned any other way. For the ability to rewrite my story. And for the practice of gratitude itself- because it is a practice, not a feeling.

And like anything else, the more you practice, the better you get.
